Two Hundred Years of Homeopathic Practice Brings Natural Healing to People the World Over

Homeopathy-300x219Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago, although its theoretical and philosophical roots go back much farther, at least to the ancient Greeks. Homeopathic remedies have been used over the last two centuries to treat a wide variety of symptoms and ailments in people of all ages in countries throughout the world.

How does homeopathic medicine work? The term itself gives a clue to the theory behind it. The word “homeopathy” comes from the Greek words for “like” (as in “similar”) and “suffering.” The German developer and popularizer of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, summarized the central concept behind homeopathy as “Let like be cured by like,” a statement known as the Law of Similars.

Hahnemann came to the conclusion that a substance that causes a particular set of symptoms in healthy people will actually relieve the same symptoms in sick people, if administered in extremely low doses. The first substance Hahnemann studied was the ground-up bark of the cinchona tree, a Peruvian plant that had been used since pre-Columbian times by native Quecha healers. When Hahnemann took cinchona, he experienced fever and shivering, which were exactly the symptoms that cinchona was used to treat by both the Quecha and by conquering Spaniards and other Europeans who adopted it.

Following his Law of Similars, Hahnemann conducted tests that English-speaking homeopaths call “provings.” By administering a variety of plant and mineral substances to healthy volunteers and noting the results, Hahnemann and his successors compiled large lists correlating various homeopathic remedies with the symptoms against which they should be effective.

Today, a trained Arizona homeopathic doctor can prepare homeopathic remedies to treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions. Homeopathic remedies are safe for all ages because of the extreme dilution that the active ingredients undergo. Homeopathic therapy is highly individualized and requires a knowledgeable physician who will take the time to listen to your complete medical history in order to find the most effective remedy for you.
